Mr. Regeimbal visits the Des Moines Activity Center the fourth Thursday of each month at 12:30 p.m. to discuss legal topics. No reservation is required. Please bring questions. This is a free service.

Topics include:

Gathering Your Documents
In an effort to cut cost, some retirees purchase their wills and powers of attorney at a stationary store or off the internet. In most instances, these documents are fill-in-the-blanks type of documents. While many of the documents are filled out correctly, there are instances where errors are made. If you have a "fill-in-the-blanks" will or power of attorney, this would be a good opportunity to have the documents reviewed for correctness. Similarly, if your estate planning documents were completed many years ago, you may want to consider having the documents reviewed.

Will Planning
For those retirees who do not have a will and due to cost concerns have not seen a lawyer to assist in the preparation of a will, Mike will assist in the preparation of a will at no cost. The will planning session will include a discussion of the statutory requirements for a will. The specific provisions to include method of distribution and personal representative/executor. This information will be used to draft the will which can then be signed the following month at the same seminar session.

Financial Durable Power of Attorney
For those retirees who do not have a Financial Durable Power of Attorney (FDPOA) and due to cost concerns have not seen a lawyer to assist in the preparation of an FDPOA, Mike will assist in the preparation of an FDPOA at no cost. The FDPOA planning session will include a discussion of the statutory requirements of an FDPOA. The specific provisions of the FDPOA will be gathered and used to draft a FDPOA which can be signed the following month at the same seminar session.

Medical Durable Power of Attorney
For those retirees who do not have a Medical Durable Power of Attorney (MDPOA) and due to cost concerns have not seen a lawyer to assist in the preparation of an MDPOA, Mike will assist in the preparation of an MDPOA at no cost. The MDPOA planning session will include a discussion of the statutory requirements of an MDPOA. The specific provisions of the MDPOA will be gathered and used to draft an MDPOA which can be signed the following month at the same seminar session.

Health Care Directive
Many retirees have completed a statutory Health Care Directive which merely addresses a client's desire regarding the administration of nutrition and hydration in the event of terminal illness. What the statutory format does not consider are issues such as CPR, antibiotics, ventilation, blood transfusion, etc. Your direction to your family regarding life sustaining procedures can significantly reduce the anxiety of family having to guess about your wishes.Issues surrounding the use and implementation of a Health Care Directive will be discussed at this session. All attendees will have an opportunity to complete a Health Care Directive which goes beyond nutrition and hydration.
